Obituary for Dorothy H. Jenks

Dorothy H. Jenks, 95, having lived in Ithaca for 92 years, died peacefully in her home, June 17, 2022. Dottie moved to Avon, NY to be closer to family and has resided for the past 3 years in her own apartment. Born July 15, 1926 in Ithaca, she was the daughter of the late Harold D. and Teresa Miller Jenks. Following an internship from a business course in her senior year at Ithaca High School in 1944, she was directly employed with GLF/Agway, as a Production Manager and remained with them for the next 25 years. After the company moved to Syracuse, she made the decision to remain in Ithaca with her mother and embarked on a new career for the next 25 years as an Advertising Coordinator and Publications Manager with Ithaco, Inc., a parts manufacturer of space satellites.

Dottie was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ithaca for many years and the United Methodist Church after moving to Avon. She was an enthusiastic supporter of many Ithaca organizations such as Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Museum of the Earth, Lab of Paleontology Research among several others. She was fiercely independent all her life, enjoyed many hobbies and loved traveling in her many new Ford vehicles –"Arabela" being her first. She lived with and lovingly cared for her Mother for many years and was an avid golfer, knitter, reader, and her claim to fame - candy maker. She loved spending time with her family and took such pride in doing for others - a life well lived!

She is survived by her sister Lillian Johnson of Avon and Lillian's 5 children, David (Lynn), Diane (Doug), Alan, Nancy (George) and Karen (Garry) along with 21grand nieces and nephews; nephew William Jenks of OH; niece-in-law, Marcia Jenks of Auburn and several grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dottie was predeceased by her brother, William, sister Jeanette, and nephews Theodore Jenks and Harold Jenks.

We are extremely indebted during the last year of her life to many wonderful caregivers and family members along with the Livingston County Hospice. Arrangements will be made with the Stephenson Dougherty Funeral Home in Avon and she will be interred in the East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca where there will be a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made with the Livingston County Hospice 2 Murray Hill Drive Mt. Morris, NY 14510, the Avon United Methodist Church 130 Genesee Street Avon, NY 14414 or the charity of your choice.
