Avon – Died peacefully on February 7, 2020, at the age of 90, after a brief battle with leukemia. Art was predeceased by his wife Joan Elizabeth (Morsch) Gibson, his parents Martin (Mike) R. Gibson and Esther (Luce) Gibson, and his brother Harold Gibson.

Art is survived by his brother Howard Gibson, and sisters Greta May, Norma Evans, and Lois (Richard) Pappa. Art's children are: Mike (Matsue) Gibson of California and Tokyo, John Gibson of New York State, Margaret (Paul) Williamson of Florida, and Judy (Steve) Figgins of California. Art loved his grandchildren: Kent and Kate Gibson; Samantha, Kenneth, Andrew, Kersten Haley; Matthew, Curtis, Connor Figgins; and his great-grandson: Elijah White.

Art was born on October 24, 1929 in Dansville, New York. He was raised in Ossian, NY, first on the Gibson Family farm and then later at his parent's home behind their store at Ossian Center. In his free time, Art enjoyed roaming through the woods and pastures, and learned to swim in Sugar Creek. He attended Dansville Central High School and graduated in 1947. He then enrolled at the University of Buffalo where he graduated with a B.S. of Business Administration with a major in Economics.

Arthur joined the Air Force on September 1, 1950, and after basic training at Lackland Air Force base in Texas he attended and graduated from weather school. He was transferred to Johnston Island, one-quarter square mile in area, located about 850 miles southwest of Hawaii, where he spent the remaining three years of his enlistment.

On May 1, 1954, he married Joan Elizabeth Morsch in Dansville. The newlyweds soon moved to Cheektowaga, NY, where Art worked for General Motors. In 1962, he took a purchasing job for two years with Welch’s Foods Inc. in Westfield, NY. This was followed by a purchasing position at Ohio Match Co. first in Wadsworth, Ohio and then in Maumee, Ohio. Arthur was later headhunted by Wesson Foods in New Orleans, LA. There he became the Southern Regional Purchasing Manager for the company from 1967 – 1970. Then from 1970 – 1975 he was promoted to Regional Purchasing Manager for Hunt Wesson Foods at the head office in Fullerton California. From 1975 – 1984 he became Vice President of Purchasing at Glass Containers Corp. in Fullerton, CA. His final job was as Director of Purchasing for Denny’s/TW Services in Spartanburg, SC.

In retirement, Art and Joan traveled by motorhome enjoying crossing the United States many times; venturing east and west, north and south visiting loved ones, friends, and seeing the sights. They also visited Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and Japan.

Family and friends are invited to call Friday, February 14, 2020 from 4-7 pm at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc. 350 Genesee Street, Avon. Private interment Greenmount Cemetery, North Dansville. The family thanks you for your condolences and prayers.
