Obituary

LIMA -
Unexpectedly on August 31, 2019, at age 91. Predeceased by his mother
and father, Della and Sam Wallan and sister Mary Butler. He is survived
by his loving wife of 69 years, Ginny; son and daughter-in-law, David
and Peggy Wallan; 2 grandchildren, Michelle (Drew) Girton, Matthew
(Sarah) Wallan; 3 great-grandchildren, Abby and Cate Girton, Isla
Wallan; sisters, Margaret Purtell and Frances Shaughnessy; many nieces
and nephews.

Joe was born in Binghamton, NY and raised in Endicott and Apalachin,
where he met his wife Ginny, before settling in Lima for 65 years. He
was a United States Marine during the Korean conflict and was retired
from the Harris Corporation in Rochester. Prior to that he worked for
Rochester Radio and as a carpenter and mechanic. In retirement he
worked part time in a small engine repair shop which gave him the
opportunity to meet and talk to people. He was patient, had many skills
and held himself to high standards - traits he passed on to his son and
grandchildren.

Joe was an exceptionally devoted husband and father who made many
sacrifices for his wife and family. He loved all children and
particularly delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
never missed an opportunity to interact or play with the kids in his
life which resulted in him making a positive impact on many young
people. His self-deprecating sense of humor was his signature trait and
made him fun to be around. He even joked with his hospital caregivers
through the last hours of his life. In retirement Joe enjoyed serving
as an usher, Eucharistic Minister and volunteer at St. Rose Church as
well as working at the Lima food pantry. He greatly appreciated the
blessings in his life: a loving wife and family, many good friends and
many healthy and happy years.

Friends may call Thursday 3-7 PM at the O’Connell-Dougherty Funeral
Home, 2041 Lake Ave., Lima. His Funeral Mass will be held Friday 10 AM
at St. Rose Church, Lima. Interment St. Rose Cemetery. Memorials may be
made to Livingston County Catholic Charities 34 E State St, Mt Morris,
NY 14510 OR
Livingston County Hospice, 2 County Campus Mt.Morris, New York 14510-1619

Joe was probably the first person we met when our family began attending St Rose, and, most Sundays, was the first person we talked with as we came to church. His smile, his love for us and all of our kids, his humor, and his joy made him someone who we came to love and who we will miss very much. We so enjoyed the short few years in which we had the privilege of knowing him, and are so thankful that we had the opportunity. Joe was a special man, a friend to so many...almost everyone with whom he came into contact. We consider ourselves blessed to be counted among those who he called friends.

We're sure going to miss you, Uncle Joe. You became the Patriarch of our family when Grandpa Wallan died so many years ago. Your goodness and kind heart showed in your everyday life. You always had a joke or a story for us and a big smile. I doubt you have any idea how many lives you enriched during your time on this earth. Rest in peace, dear Uncle, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
